History of Ripley’s Believe It or Not

First things first: what is Ripley’s Believe It or Not, anyway?

Well, it’s one of numerous “odditoriums” that allow individuals to experience the strange collections of a man named Robert Ripley.

According to Ripley’s website, Ripley identified many oddities during his worldwide travel in the early 20th century. After returning home, he published his travel journals into what would become the first “Believe It or Not” book in 1929. Before that, Ripley had also published a book on sports oddities called “Champs and Chumps” in 1918.

Robert Ripley opened the first Odditorium in 1933 at the World Fair. This exhibit showcased many of the items Ripley had collected while traveling abroad. These odditoriums functioned as a way to share unique experiences and inspire curiosity for people of all ages.

Now, there are Odditoriums sprinkled all across the world for individuals from all walks of life to explore.
